Lady Golden Lions complete sweep of Marion
By Chuck Livingston Sports Editor
No matter the matchup, the Wonder Lady Golden Lions will usually have an advantage in the backcourt with Tashlee Milow and Ariyah Hazley. Last night against Marion was no different. Locked in a tight, low-scoring game with their league rivals, Wonder (16-0, 5-0 district) got a spark from their potent guards to race to a 49-18 win. Milow and Hazley hit for 18 points apiece, while Freeman added 10 to pace Wonder in their win. Marion got seven from Keiana Delaney, six from Joi Montgomery and four Kaia Williams. Wonder’s dynamic duo’s success did not surprise their head coach, Kwame Brown. “They did what we asked them to do,” said the third-year head coach with a smile. “Tashlee shot the ball pretty well.” Wonder led 8-4 after the first quarter, but Milow and Hazley combined to score all of the Lady Golden Lions’ 19 points in the second stanza. Highlighted in that outing was a 13-4 run that gave Wonder a 21-8 lead that forced a Marion timeout and the visitors led 27-13 at halftime. Little did anyone know at the time, Wonder had scored enough in the first half to win the game, thanks to a stingy defensive effort. The Lady Pats connected on just one of their nine second-half field goal attempts and was five of 20 for the game. “We hang our hat on defense. We try real hard. I’d say 70 percent of what we do at practice is on defense,” Brown explained. “We always want to hold teams to under 20 points, that’s a goal of ours, and I guess we did it tonight.” While Marion struggled in the second half, Wonder seemed to thrive. The Lady Golden Lions hit nine of their 14 attempts after halftime, many of which involved Hazley or Milow driving coast-to-coast following a rebound on the defensive end. “I don’t really like having to shoot the ball,” Brown said. “I’d much rather see us drive it on offense.” An offensive rebound and stickback from Freeman would put Wonder ahead 49-18 and start the continuous running clock with 4:35 left in regulation. Marion will play West on Monday night at Lehr Arena. Tip-off of the girls game will be at approximately 6 p.m.
