The West Memphis Lady Devils came within a Hail Mary of playing for the championship game, but they came away with a third-place finish in the Focus Bank Knockout Classic last week at Greene County Tech in Paragould. The Lady Devils (8-1) got started off on the right foot in the first round with a 61-49 victory over Greenland. Senior guard Sable Greer poured in a game-high 23 points to pace the West Memphis offense while Anquanetta Chatt hit 11 and Southeast Missouri State signee LaShala Saine had eight rebounds and seven blocked shots. The near-miss game came in the semifinals against powerful Fort Smith Northside, which used a 32-foot heave at the buzzer over the 6-foot-4 Saine by Aahliya Jackson for a 44-41 win over the Lady Devils. Jackson, a Texas A&M signee averaging 32 points thus far, was held to 12 points. Greer led the Lady Devils with 14 points while Chatt pumped in 11 and Saine filled up the stat sheet with 9 points, 8 rebounds and 6 blocks. The Lady Devils ended the tournament on a high note by defeating conference foe Mountain Home 47-41. Chatt paced the scorebook with 17 points while Greer added and Saine, a Southeast Missouri State signee, had a near triple-double with 8 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks. The West Memphis girls will play again in the 15th-annual Dragon Fire Classic in Collierville, Tenn., with a first-round game on Dec. 26 at 6 p.m. against Memphis Westwood. Other teams in the Classic include Collierville, Millington, Whitehaven, Marion, White Station, Bolton, Craigmont, Jackson (Tenn.) Christian, Southwind, Bartlett, Memphis Central, St. Agnes, Arlington and Jonesboro.
