Shelia Burns says her team’s mantra this season is “Refuse to lose.” Her senior guard, Sable Greer embodied that chant Tuesday night at Lehr Arena. Greer scored nine of her game-high 17 points in the second half, including a key three-point play late in the third quarter to lead the West Memphis Lady Devils to a 47-33 victory over Jacksonville. “We’re going to refuse to lose this year and we’re going to do everything in our power to make that happen,” said the West Memphis head coach. Playing a team that they had beaten 68-45 in the season opener at Jacksonville, the Lady Devils’ final 14-point margin Tuesday night was deceiving. It was a much closer game thanks to some early miscues and the fact Jacksonville just would not go away. “We just were not sharp; I don’t know if it was because we were unfocused or what,” said Burns. “When you take care of a team like we did early in the year sometimes you take them for granted.” The Lady Devils (5-0) slogged their way through a first half filled with turnovers and cold shooting. But the second half, especially the fourth quarter, belonged to the Lady Devils and Greer. The hosts put up a 9-2 run to start the third quarter after senior Summer Abram, who had to leave the game in the fourth quarter with an injured knee, swished a three-pointer to make it a 25-16 Lady Devil cushion. But Jacksonville persevered any West Memphis run with some timely three-point shooting. Desiree Williams, who led Jacksonville with 15 points, canned a three-pointer with 3:35 left in the game to slice the Lady Devil lead to 35-31. That’s when the athletic Greer made the play of the game. Leading on a fastbreak, Greer twisted her way through traffic for a layup and was fouled. She completed the three-point play to make it 38-31 with 3:25 to play. “Sable’s one of our leaders and she made the plays tonight when she had to,” said Burns. The Lady Devils locked down on defense the last three minutes of the game, allowing just two free throws while answering with a rebound basket by Amesha Brown, a layup from Taylor Johnson and a free throw from LaShala Saine to close out the victory. Abram and Anquanetta Chatt each scored five points for West Memphis while Saine, Niyah Townsend, Niki Higgs and Brown all had four points.
