Blue Devils fare well in ‘Brain Bowl’

The Academies of West Memphis Quiz Bowl got its season off on a solid note with a strong showing at the Brain Brawl at Oxford, Miss., last weekend. In a field consisting of seven pools of teams with six teams in each pool, the Blue Devils finished second in each of their respective pools. Quiz Bowl coach Dewanda Kirkland took a Team A and Team B squad each to the competition. Overall, Team A finished 9th and Team B finished 16th out of 42 teams. On Team A were captain Miguel Hernandez, Riley Young, Ryan Conston and Josh Foster. Team B consisted of captain Bryan Conston, Jordan Young, Byron Emerson and Tristan Banks. For Team A the high scorers were Ryan Conston and Foster. Team B high scorers were Bryan Conston and Young. Other team members included Haille Taylor, Tyler Dye, De’sharea Smith, Dawson Mathis, Shiv Patel, William Anchia, Cody Watson, Ervin Jeffries and Byron Kirkland “We’ve got a lot of kids who’ve been at this since they were in fourth grade,” said Kirkland. “We’ve had some strong teams, but I’d have to rank this one up there pretty high.” Teams from Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi were represented in the Brain Braw. The West Memphis team got to tour the home of William Faulkner while in Oxford and Rowan Oak.
